Educational collaboration with Mexico earns world honors
PCC is the only U.S. college to be recognized at international event
World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics, an international network of collages and associations, presented its third Awards of Excellence on Monday, Oct. 9, in Melbourne, Australia, recognizing leaders in the field of professional and technical education and training.
Pima Community College received an Award of Excellence in the category of Access to Learning and Employment for its long-standing efforts to build educational partnerships to reach underserved students on both sides of the U.S – Mexico border. It was the only U.S. college to be recognized among institutions from 25 countries.
PCC Chancellor Lee Lambert and Ricardo Castro-Salazar, vice president for International Development, accepted the award on the College’s behalf. Award recipients were recognized in seven categories, based on the international value of the award-winning institutions, individuals, and programs, as well as their achievements, benefits to students, and innovation.
Lambert and Castro-Salazar also presented a plenary session on the topic “How Industry 4.0 & Global Education will Shape the Future of Work: A Case Study from Arizona.” Chancellor Lambert also was a panelist at the “Tertiary Education International Policy Forum.”
PCC has collaborated with the Mexican Consulate on numerous initiatives, including creation of an Education Orientation Window at the consulate, where Mexican nationals and Mexican-Americans can learn about education opportunities in Tucson and Mexico.
The college also has strengthened partnerships with the Institute for Mexicans Abroad and other Mexico institutions, which have helped offer over 340 scholarships to Mexican-origin and Hispanic students; increased the College’s involvement in a Mexican government program that provides financial and entrepreneurship education to the Mexican community in the U.S.; and provided faculty training programs, conversation partners and peer mentoring
